YOU’RE DONE WAITING

The waiting ends at 10 PM EST on Wednesday. You’ve done the holidays, you’ve braved record-setting blizzards and stocked up on food and beverages. You might have accumulated as many questions about the upcoming season as inches of snow on your driveway. What you’re now reading is the first competition preview from Cincinnati Soccer Talk for 2025. And it’s also the first article I’ve written in my new position as a contributing writer for CST. I’m honored and brimming with excitement. In simply creating this content, I’ve sensed how much I’m going to learn about writing, about FC Cincinnati, about the global world of futbol, and our community. I would be remiss if I didn’t express my deepest gratitude to CST and you. Grab your courage and your love of this team and this game. Ready? Let’s begin.

THE OPPOSITION

FC Cincinnati travels from Florida, through a lush rainforest filled with jaguars and macaws into a valley surrounded by mountains, to Estadio Nacional Chelato Uclés in Tegucigalpa. They face one of the most successful clubs in Honduran football history, FC Motagua (mo-TAH-guaaaaaaah), dubbed Ciclón Azul (Blue Cyclone). This is the first in a two-leg competition, each game played in respective home stadiums.

Founded in 1928, Motagua has a long history and has participated in CONCACAF since 1969. They completed 2024 by winning their Liga Nacional over Olimpia, who they faced Sunday during their seventh contest of the year.  Motagua is formidable, and with a season-opening victory over Real Sociedad, 3-0, picked up right where they left off last season. They qualified for the 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup tournament after winning their Play-In series vs. CD Águila in the 2024 CONCACAF Central American Cup.

Coach Diego Vásquez, a former goalkeeper who once played many seasons for Motagua and saved the penalty that gave them a national championship, also holds their league record for coaching over 300 consecutive games.

Motagua Season Record

THE EAGLES TO WATCH

Motagua have had their forward power decimated in recent weeks.  The man who would have been the eagle to watch was Argentine forward Agustín Auzmendi, a 27-year-old who started as a youth with Acassuso before working his way through to Motagua. He departed for Godoy Cruz of the Argentine Super League, leaving his younger brother, Rodrigo Auzmendi, behind.  Rodrigo, a 24-year-old standing at 6’3”, is no slouch, scoring 12 goals in 24 matches last season. He plays an aggressive game and can rack up yellow cards quickly. He scored a hat-trick on February 6th over UPNFM, and another goal against Juticalpa on the 12th, assuring the Motagua faithful that the Auzmendi name still means goals and victory. Although likely available Wednesday, Rodrigo may soon face disciplinary action and possibly lose his position with his team following an incident on Sunday where he spit on an opposing player during their loss to Olimpia.

In addition, Motagua has made a compelling recent acquisition of striker, Diego Iván Ledesma. Ledesma, a 6-foot, 31-year-old veteran, arrives from Tecnico Universitario, to make up for the other recently departed Rubilio Castillo, who left and signed with Deportivo Pereira. Ledesma already contributed two late goals in their 3-0 victory over Juticalpa.

WHO ARE WE?

Ever wake up during your school years and realize you hadn’t quite completed that big science project due that morning? It feels like we’re finishing this team project just in time, especially with the signing of Evander, just before wheels up to Honduras. The MLS home opener is Saturday against the NY Red Bulls. With three games in eight days, it will certainly be interesting to see how Noonan plays the first of this two-game series and how the team will handle the wildly varying climate conditions.

We come off a frustrating but well-fought final pre-season match with a 2-2 draw against Atlanta. Kubo, Bucha, and Nwobodo all received cards in just the first half. That Atlanta scored a PK in the 91st minute might leave a bad taste in our mouths. We need to be sharp at the start of this next contest.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The “expect the unexpected” mantra has proven accurate since the season’s outset, particularly concerning player transactions, and this opening game is no exception. We should anticipate a starting lineup similar to the pre-season Atlanta match against Motagua, with Anunga and Mboma Dem as likely substitutes. Evander’s participation remains uncertain, possibly contingent on a comfortable lead.

For the first game that counts, taking a six hour plane trip into the rainforest to a stadium at 3,248 feet above sea level (Denver is 5,280), and playing a team that, despite recent shakeups, is still championship caliber and well into their league season  at 10 PM sounds like the opening premise to a new installment of the Mission: Impossible series. Why not blindfolded?

Look for our returning midfielders, Bucha, Kubo, and Nwobodo to continue to scrap and thread forward to Denkey. We should expect a decent performance from our stalwart defense as well. Which means we are right back where we were at the end of last season: wondering, can we score?

Where to watch:

You can watch this match Wednesday night at 10pm EST on FS2 for english or ViX ($5 a month app) for spanish.

Like many of you, I tuned into FC Cincinnati’s preseason match against the Philadelphia Union on Friday with great anticipation. Though I knew we’d encounter poor camera angles, bad production value, and wonky lineups (and we did!), I couldn’t pass up my first chance to see the 2025 version of the team we all love.

Preseason in every sport is notorious for sending fans into over-reaction mode. Whether our teams are winning or losing, we want real data from preseason performances that just doesn’t exist. FC Cincinnati handled the Union pretty easily in the end, winning  4-1 after 120 minutes of play. However, I would preach caution when reading anything into the results of the match. Instead, here are some tactical observations  that just might turn out to be true as we head into the season…maybe.

*Note: I’m writing this assuming that Lucho Acosta will not be on the roster for the 2025 season.

Kévin Denkey will get off to a slow start in 2025.

There is a truckload of caveats that needs to be dumped all over this take:

  • Denkey hasn’t had much of a chance to play with important players like Yuya Kubo or Luca Orellano  due to their late arrival to camp.
  • Denkey is a super-star designated player, and it wouldn’t be odd if he was just trying to get his fitness up while not getting hurt during the preseason.

Denkey’s strength and tenacity will probably allow him to get better as games progress and defenses wear down, yet we only saw him for around 30 minutes on Friday.

All of that said, I fully expect  Kévin Denkey to get off to a slow start this season, and not just because he is a young guy trying to get settled on a new team in a new country. FC Cincinnati seemed to have a very difficult time progressing the ball through the center of the pitch in this preseason match, and I think that will continue as the team tries to figure out life post-Lucho Acosta.

Acosta led the team in both progressive pass receptions (237) and progressive passes (250). That means if he wasn’t the one passing the ball forward and starting the attack, he was typically the one receiving the pass. On Friday, that presence was sorely missed. The team relied heavily on playing short passes to the wing backs and asking them to find an entry pass into the midfield or the forward line. When that wasn’t available, the team seemed to dump a ball in Kévin Denkey’s direction and ask him to battle a center back to hold the ball up while the team transitioned forward. All of this meant that Denkey spent a lot of time checking back into midfield to get onto 50/50 balls or to be an option for an under-pressure wingback. It is going to be tough for him to take on that much of the ball progression load and still find opportunities to put the ball into the back of the net.

Even if Evander or another Acosta replacement comes in soon, it will take some time for FC Cincinnati to sort out how they are going to get the ball to Kévin Denkey in dangerous forward positions. I expect him to start slow but build into the season as they do just that.

FC Cincinnati’s press will look the same, but be better, in 2025

I was really interested to see how FC Cincinnati would set up to press the opposition without Lucho Acosta on the pitch this season. Under Pat Noonan, the Orange and Blue has mostly pressed out of a 3-4-2-1 formation with Acosta both triggering and leading the press. That means that he was both indicating when the team should press and when it should drop off, often the furthest player forward when the opposition’s back line had the ball. Consequently, whoever was playing center forward spent a lot of time dropping in as an attacking midfielder in defense.

Without Lucho Acosta on the pitch on Friday, FCC still pressed out of the 3-4-2-1 formation. However, with the starters on the pitch, Kévin Denkey led the press with Luca Orellano and Pavel Bucha dropping in as midfielders. Denkey is not only much more energetic as the spearhead of the press than Acosta, but he will also be more adept at pulling defenders out of position or creating space in the box in transition when the press wins the ball back. Furthermore, new left wingback Lukas Engel is going to be far better defensively than Yamil Asad, Orellano, or any of the cast of characters that filled in at that spot last season.

FC Cincinnati’s first goal came directly off the press, and I expect that to be a feature for the team in 2025.

FC Cincinnati will defend more and look to score in transition in 2025

Last season we would often see FC Cincinnati build patiently from back to front before looking to get Lucho Acosta on the ball in the final third of the field. The team relied on set possession and pinning teams back to generate chances. On Friday, FCC certainly possessed the ball at times, but mostly with their defenders. Once the team made the decision to go forward, they looked to get there quickly.

I don’t think that FCC is going  to dump and chase or turn into the kind of direct team that we’ve seen out of the Red Bulls, St. Louis, or even the Philadelphia Union. However, it sure looked to me like the tactical emphasis in possession during this preseason match was to pass the ball side to side in the back and midfield only as a means to move the ball forward as quickly as possible. Often, the team would lose the ball or find a shot prior to both wingbacks even being able to join the attack.

That sort of frenetic pace will mean the team might spend more time defending, but when they win the ball, they will be more decisive in turning defense into attack.

So, that’s what I saw on Friday. I think these tactics just might give us a glimpse at how FCC will play throughout the coming season…maybe.

The expansion draft came and went, leaving many questions in the new landscape of an ever-expanding league. Moving from 29 to 30 teams (15 in the East and 15 in the West), San Diego FC is set to make its inaugural debut on opening weekend at LA Galaxy. Their home debut will take place against St. Louis CITY FC at Snapdragon Stadium on March 1, 2025. But before all the excitement unfolded, there was an essential detail the newcomers had to address – their roster. Many believed this expansion draft would shed light on the potential tactics and formations of this new team. So, what exactly happened? Who was picked? How did this whole thing work? Let’s dive in and recap what transpired.

How the Expansion Draft Worked

On December 11, 2024, the new kids on the Major League Soccer (MLS) block, San Diego FC, selected up to five players of their choosing from a list of about 350 total players across all of MLS. Every team was able to protect 12 players from their senior roster (slots 1-20) and supplemental roster (slots 21-30). Generation Adidas players occupying roster slots 21-24 and Homegrown players aged 25 or younger during the year of the Expansion Draft were automatically protected if they were on a club’s roster at the conclusion of the 2024 MLS season. If a player had a no-trade clause in their contract, their MLS club was required to protect them, and they counted as one of the 12 protected players.

Teams with four or more international players were required to protect at least three of them, excluding any who were automatically protected. Teams with three international players needed to protect two. Teams with only two international players had to protect one. Teams with just one international player were not required to protect that player. Designated Players and other discretionary players were NOT automatically protected.

If a Free Agent was selected in the Expansion Draft, the selecting team was regarded as the player’s “current team” under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) rules concerning Free Agency, while the team losing the player was treated as a “new club.” If the Free Agent declined to sign a contract with the selecting team, that team became eligible for Compensatory Allocation Money, provided it had complied with the CBA’s bona fide offer requirements for free agents.

Teams that lost a player during the draft received $50,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM). However, clubs that qualified for Compensatory Allocation Money (CAM) under the CBA rule for making bona fide offers to free agents did not receive an additional $50,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) if that player was chosen in the Expansion Draft.

Who Did FCC Choose to Protect? Who’s Up for Grabs?
The day before the draft, every team across the league released their list of 12 protected players, and by default, those who would be up for selection. Here are who FCC chose to protect:

Protected Players:
Luciano Acosta
Álvaro Barreal
Pavel Bucha
Roman Celentano
Teenage Hadebe
Kevin Kelsy
Yuya Kubo
Matt Miazga
Obinna Nwobodo
Luca Orellano
Miles Robinson
DeAndre Yedlin

And the Automatically Protected FC Cincinnati Players:
Arquimides Ordoñez (Homegrown Player)
Stiven Jimenez (Homegrown Player)
Gerardo Valenzuela (Homegrown Player)
Paul Walters (Homegrown Player)

Many fans were skeptical of some of the protected players, including Kevin Kelsy, whose loan with FCC expired on December 2, 2024, and Álvaro Barreal, whose purchase was not picked up by Brazilian club Cruzeiro Esporte Clube, to which he was loaned in March 2024.

The means that the following are up for San Diego FC’s choosing:
London Aghedo
Joey Akpunonu
Yamil Asad
Corey Baird
Isaiah Foster
Nicholas Gioacchini
Nick Hagglund
Bret Halsey
Alec Kann
Kipp Keller
Evan Louro
Malik Pinto
Alvas Powell
Sergio Santos

The list of unprotected players has also received mixed reviews, noting some high profile potential losses including fan favorites Nick Hagglund and Yamil Asad. Remember, only 5 players from ALL of MLS will be selected in this draft.

Who Ended Up Being Chosen?
The draft went live on San Diego FC’s YouTube at 10:30pm EST/7:30pm PST. The sizable crowd was ready, the hosts, Matt Doyle, Andrew Wiebe, and Calen Carr, were hyped, and the stage was set. Here are the draft selections:

Heine Gikling Bruseth (Midfielder, Orlando City)
Hamady Diop (Defender, Charlotte FC)
Jasper Löffelsend (Fullback/Midfielder, Colorado Rapids)

These three were drafted and selected to remain on the team. But SDFC got five picks? Well, that is true. However, they opted to make a deal with each of the final two.

Hosei Kijima (Midfielder, St. Louis CITY FC): Traded him to D.C. United in exchange for $400,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money (GAM).
Thiago Andrade (Forward, NYCFC): Traded him to Toronto FC in exchange for the club’s natural first-round pick in MLS SuperDraft 2025 and up to $250,000 in conditional GAM if certain performance metrics are met. San Diego also retains a percentage of a future transfer fee if Andrade is sold out of MLS by Toronto.

San Diego FC Roster (as of right now)
Chucky Lozano (Forward, PSV Eindhoven)
Marcus Ingvartsen (Forward, FC Nordsjælland)
Alex Mighten (Forward, Nottingham Forest)
Tomás Ángel (Forward, LAFC)
Jeppe Tverskov (Midfielder, FC Nordsjælland)
Jasper Löffelsend (Midfielder/Defender, Colorado Rapids)
Paddy McNair (Defender, Middlesbrough)
Chris McVey (Defender, DC United)
Hamady Diop (Defender, Charlotte FC)
Duran Ferree (Goalkeeper, San Diego Loyal)
CJ dos Santos (Goalkeeper, Inter Miami)

How Could This Affect FC Cincinnati?
While FC Cincinnati was spared in this draft, future deals could still be made. FC Cincinnati has some work to do before their set and ready for their season. Questions remain for a number of players on FCC’s roster. This list includes Nick Hagglund, Kevin Kelsy, Luciano Acosta, and Álvaro Barreal. What will Chris Albright and his team decide to do? Will any deals be made in the near future with this new club on the block? The budget is tight, and contract issues still exist for some fan favorites and notable players. Only time will tell as we patiently wait to see where the front office of FC Cincinnati will go from here and what’s in store for the team who seek to gear up for success.
