Following the departure of Jaap Stam on Monday, FC Cincinnati (4-8-13, 20 points) will take on Toronto FC at BMO Field on Wednesday night looking for a new manager bump from interim boss Tyrone Marshall. Luckily for Marshall, FCC has had success against Toronto this season, taking all six available points from two matches.

FCC will look to rebound from a disappointing road match in the District of Columbia, where the 4-2 final scoreline flattered FCC (even with a couple of very questionable decisions from the match officials on DC United goals).

Marshall, who joined FCC in February 2021 as an academy coach after five years as an assistant at Real Salt Lake, said in an interview with the team that he wanted to bring energy back to the locker room and to the field. In terms of tactics and personnel, Marshall gave few hints about how he would set up FCC in his managerial debut. He said he was “still trying to figure out personnel wise” what he would do but that he would “evaluate everyone now and decide who’s going to be the best fit” against Toronto while still looking ahead to Saturday’s match against New York Red Bulls.

Marshall will also have Álvaro Barreal available after he served a one-match ban for his red card against NYCFC. (UPDATE: Isaac Atanga remains out for another match following his red card) Relatively new signing Tyler Blackett played 30 minutes against D.C. United over the weekend as he continues to build match fitness and could be available for selection. The other new signing Kyle Scott has yet to make the 18-man gameday roster but he also appears to be inching closer to a debut.

The Opposition

As disappointing as FCC’s season has been, it’s been worse for Toronto (4-7-15, 19 points). After a dismal start to the season and first year manager Chris Armas’ departure in July, Toronto still remains at the bottom of the Eastern Conference and Supporters Shield standings. Toronto’s goal difference, -23, and expected goal difference, -16.7, are both worst in MLS.

However, Toronto is unbeaten in its last two MLS matches, defeating Nashville SC 2-1 and playing Colorado to a 0-0 draw over the weekend. Throw in a 4-0 win against York United in the quarterfinals of the Canadian Championship in between those matches and Toronto has shown signs of an uptick in form in the last two weeks.

Injuries and other issues have hampered Toronto’s attack. Ayo Akinola, an up-and-coming striker who chose to represent Canada on the national level is out for the season with a torn ACL suffered while on Gold Cup duty. Jozy Altidore remains sidelined following foot surgery in August, though he missed time with Toronto due to other reasons as well. Without attacking contributions from top level strikers, midfielder Jonathan Osorio leads the team with four goals on the season. Though designated player Alejandro Pozuelo will be out with a lower body injury, Toronto’s other healthy DP Yeferson Soteldo should be available for selection. Soteldo should prove to be a challenge to deal with however Marshall sets up FCC’s defense.

The Jaap Stam era came to an end Monday morning as FC Cincinnati announced his dismissal via press release. The move comes after another disappointing result in a wearisome season for the Orange and Blue.

“During our nearly two-month process to identify the next General Manager for FC Cincinnati, it was apparent that a Head Coach change was necessary. Therefore, after a great deal of deliberation, the club has made the decision to now move to the future with Jaap no longer serving as Head Coach.” said FC Cincinnati president Jeff Berding in the clubs press release.

“We believe a change in leadership is in the best interest of the club at this time, and a new General Manager will lead the search for a new Head Coach. We are an ambitious club and we remain focused on achieving our goals, the first of which is making Cincinnati a championship city. We thank Jaap for everything he has done for FC Cincinnati during his time here, and we wish him the best as he can now head home to be with his family.”

The former Manchester United legend compiled an overall record of 8 wins, 13 draws and 28 loses over two incomplete seasons. FCC seemed to begin their return to respectability in June going 2W-2L-7D over a two month span, but recent results along with the departure of GM Gerard Nijkamp may have paved the way for his termination.

FCC’s release stated that a search for a new head coach is already underway.

The club also decided to move on from assistants Yoann Damet and Said Bakkati. Damet had fulfilled the role of interim head coach on two separate occasions after the dismissal of inaugural coach Alan Koch and the controversial Ron Jans.

In a bid to turn the fortunes of the club in their last nine matches, Berding has appointed the head coach of FC Cincinnati’s U-19 squad and future U-23 team Tyrone Marshall as the interim boss.

The move to install Marshall as interim should appease some members of the fanbase as he has substantial experience as a player and coach in Major League Soccer.

Marshall joined the RSL coaching staff in 2015 after a 15-year Major League Soccer career that saw him win MLS Cup twice, the Supporters’ Shield twice and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup three times. He departed RSL in early 2021 to rejoin his family in Kentucky and accepted a role in the FCC academy. He left RSL on good terms and was given a glowing review from their manager, now Seattle Sounders assistant Freddy Juarez.

“We want to thank Tyrone from the bottom of our hearts. He has been a big part of our success at Real Salt Lake during his tenure,” Juarez said. “As someone who aspires to be a head coach, this is a great opportunity for him to continue his progression and stay close to his family. We will be rooting for him and he will always have a place in the RSL family.”

According to the club’s release, Marshall is slated to be the coach of the upcoming MLS2 reserve squad in 2022. The Jamaican international will be tasked to right the ship while president Jeff Berding and owner Carl Lindner III move on from yet another coach, in less than ideal circumstances.

FC Cincinnati looks for a bounce-back against New York City FC https://cincinnatisoccertalk.com/2021/09/17/fc-cincinnati-looks-for-a-bounce-back-against-new-york-city-fc/ Fri, 17 Sep 2021 16:53:58 +0000 https://cincinnatisoccertalk.com/?p=38195 FC Cincinnati will look to have a bounce-back outing when the team faces off against New York City FC on Saturday.

FC Cincinnati will look to have a bounce-back outing when the team faces off against New York City FC on Saturday. FCC comes into this match after a 4-0 loss to Atlanta United FC, and has a record of 4-8-11 and a total of 20 points. The team has scored 23 goals on the season while conceding 42.

After FCC’s win against Toronto FC last Saturday, Jaap Stam decided to rotate his group and field a significantly different starting XI. According to social media, most supporters felt like they foresaw the end result before Wednesday’s match even began. Atlanta has improved since the team fired its old manager, and was able to take care of business against the Cincinnati lineup.

FCC looked out of sorts almost immediately as the match started. The defense had too many open spaces for Atlanta to be able to walk right into. Stalwarts Nick Hagglund and Ronald Matarrita didn’t do themselves many favors on the defensive side of the ball. The left back was beaten on the first goal, along with quite a few others, when Luiz Araújo ran right by them.

The defense continued to concede chances. It would take a while for Atlanta to score again, giving the team a little bit of hope the match wasn’t entirely out of reach. But at the end of the first half, that was basically put to bed as Josef Martinez doubled Atlanta’s lead. The defense continued to struggle in the second half, conceding two more goals. The midweek result reinforced that Geoff Cameron is the only reason this team is able to even have an average defense.

The offense, had an xG of 1.2 on 11 shots and three shots on goal, which isn’t as bad as previous matches, Brenner, however, stumbled at points and even in one instance completely missed the goal on a dead giveaway. The team was missing Lucho Acosta and Alvaro Barreal for nearly the entire match, and those two are instrumental to the team’s offensive output, and that showed in the team’s lack of offense.

The Opposition

New York City FC is currently fourth on the Eastern Conference table, with a record of 10-5-8 and a point tally of 35. NYCFC has scored 41 goals so far on the season and allowed 27 of them. The team’s leading scorer is Valentin Castellanos, who has tallied 11 goals on the season. The team’s second-leading scorer is Jesus Medina, with eight goals, and then the third-leading scorer is Ismael Tajouri-Shradi with seven of them.

The last time FCC and NYCFC faced off was earlier this season, in the second match of the entire season, on April 24, when NYCFC destroyed FCC by a score of 5-0.

According to WhoScored.com, NYCFC’s strengths include creating chances with through balls, creating scoring chances, attacking and defending set pieces and finishing its scoring chances.

The site also said the team’s weaknesses include protecting the lead and defending the lead against skillful players.

WhoScored.com said the team’s style of play includes attacking down the middle, short passes, attempting through balls often, taking a lot of shots and playing aggressive on defense.

The post A match to forget for FC Cincinnati in Atlanta appeared first on Cincinnati Soccer Talk.

]]>
Atlanta United demolished a heavily rotated FC Cincinnati side on Wednesday night by four goals at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Jaap Stam made six changes to the starting eleven that notched the Orange and Blue’s first home win at TQL Stadium against Toronto FC over the weekend, including mainstays Luciano Acosta, Geoff Cameron, Álvaro Barreal and Yuya Kubo starting on the bench. FCC’s change in personnel forced a change in shape as well, shifting from a 4-3-3 to more of a 5-3-2 with Rónald Matarrita joining Nick Hagglund and Gustavo Vallecilla as a center back.

Atlanta jumped out to an early lead in the fifth minute. Luiz Araújo received a pass near the center circle, held off Florian Valot, turned and outpaced Rónald Matarrita into FCC’s penalty area. None of the four Cincinnati defenders could catch up and Araújo coolly put a shot back across goal. Przemysław Tytoń got a hand on it but could not keep it out and Atlanta was up 1-0.

Brenner nearly equalized for the Orange and Blue in the 24th minute. Florian Valot held off an Atlanta player in midfield before switching play to Allan Cruz. Cruz passed to an overlapping Bailey on the right who fizzed a cross into the box towards Brenner. Brenner was ahead of his marker but could not make solid contact on the bouncing cross. The chance was another example of Brenner finding dangerous space in the box but he should have done better.

In the 30th minute, FCC squandered another opportunity to level the score. He pounced on a poor touch from Alan Franco and was in on goal. Unfortunately, Brenner put the ball just over the crossbar. To be fair, Franco recovered well and contested his shot but the Orange and Blue missed another chance to put a goal past Brad Guzan.

Atlanta nearly added a second in the 38th minute after Brooks Lennon made a smart run behind FC Cincinnati’s back line and received a lofted pass. Tyton made an excellent one-on-one save and Rónald Matarrita blocked a headed effort off of the rebound.

However, just two minutes later, Atlanta doubled their lead through Josef Martínez. An Atlanta free kick about 35 yards from goal was clipped towards Tyton’s back post. Alan Franco played it back across goal to find an unmarked Martínez, who easily headed home. Ezequiel Barco nearly added a third on the stroke of half-time but his dipping, long range effort was denied by the post. Tyton did well to block Brooks Lennon’s follow-up attempt on the rebound and FCC made it to half-time down just two goals.

After 45 minutes, FCC was left to rue what might have been. The Orange and Blue had multiple opportunities to equalize after conceding early but after a poorly defended set piece, the road back in the second half looked to be very steep.

After a quiet first ten minutes of the second half, Josef Martínez struck again. After an incomplete long ball forward from Valot targeting Brenner, Alan Franco found Barco on the half-turn. Barco took a touch into space before connecting with Martínez, making a run towards the penalty area. Atlanta’s talisman faced up with Nick Hagglund at the top of the box before putting a shot around Hagglund, who screened Tyton, into the far corner.

Jaap Stam brought Luciano Acosta and Álvaro Barreal on in the 62nd minute to try to get back in the game. Unfortunately, the game was too far gone. FCC rarely threatened in the last third of the match while Atlanta continued to create chances, some demanding interventions from Tyton.

Ezequiel Barco completed the rout in the 86th minute with an excellent free kick from about 25 yards that beat Tyton low to his left hand side.

As with so many FC Cincinnati matches, supporters can look back and say what if. If Brenner had taken either of his chances in the first half and the teams went into half-time tied, maybe FCC’s most dynamic players could have impacted the outcome in the second half. Obviously, that did not happen. Rotation and squad management is a key element of MLS as games played in summer temperatures with little rest pile up. FCC paid for their lack of rotation earlier in the season against Atlanta.

FCC will look to rebound on Saturday night at home against NYCFC, though Rónald Matarrita will be unavailable due to yellow card accumulation.
