United, but the club stood tall defensively in the second half to earn a gutsy 0-0 draw.

FC Cincinnati went into its final game of the 2019 MLS Season with nothing to gain but confidence and pride. D.C. United, on the other hand, had its destiny in its own hands. It was in fourth place which guaranteed it home-field advantage in its first playoff game. All it needed to do was beat the worst team in the league, and its first playoff game would be at home at Audi Field. Given huge opportunities, D.C. found this task beyond it.

United came out strong at the beginning of the game, but after withstanding the pressure from DC, Cincinnati was able to get some control over the game and create some chances.

Unfortunately, what looked to be a fairly exciting though chippy game came to an end in the 41st minute. Center referee Dave Gantar judged a reckless tackle from Joseph-Claude Gyau to be worthy of a red card and sent him off the pitch. In the ensuing chaos, Roland Lamah pushed Felipe to the ground and was also shown a red card.

Almost immediately after play resumed, D.C. put the ball into the net, but fortunately for the Orange and Blue, VAR came to the rescue and the goal was rescinded and an offside call was given. Cincinnati held strong to end the half scoreless 0-0.

In the second half, FCC bunkered into a 4-3-1 formation, leaving Emmanuel Ledesma up top as the loan striker. United pressed over and over but were unable to break down Cincinnati’s defense. Przemysław Tytoń was forced to make two big saves to keep the Orange and Blue in the game.

The first came in the 64th minute. Paul Arriola curled the ball towards the back post, but Tytoń was able to push it wide.

The second save came in the 70th minute. Ola Kamara headed the ball from just outside the 6-yard box forcing Tytoń to make a reaction save that looked inspired from watching volleyball.

As the game progressed, coach Ron Jans shifted the team more and more defensive, bringing in Kendall Waston, Tommy McCabe and Andrew Gutman, leaving the team set up in a 5-3 formation without any striker up top. When the final whistle blew, the team earned a point and Tytoń earned another clean sheet.

“The boys are heroes today, but I am so sorry for them,” said Jans, reflecting on the game. “I think the first red card, I don’t think it’s a red card. It was unintentional. Monsters are not born. They are created. So, in the second half, we tried to win time, to defend and defend. I think they did great. They played with a lot of heart and the longer the game lasted, we got more excited. So, great work.”

Said Greg Garza: “I think if you look at the last four games, the four teams that actually needed something, either making playoffs or even them not getting the home match for playoffs,” said Garza, feeling positive about the progress of the team. “We ruined it for Montreal, for Chicago, for Orlando and now (D.C. United) go home with not the best taste, and now they have to travel to Toronto, their first game away in a one-game playoff game. I think that’s something that kind of sticks out to me the most.”

In a season full of disappointments, FC Cincinnati fans got to see one more in person.

Moments away from ending the home season with a rare victory, the Orange and Blue conceded in second-half stoppage time to Orlando City SC’s Benji Michel. The goal canceled a first-half tally by Allan Cruz for a 1-1 draw between the two sides Sunday at Nippert Stadium.

“I felt like we could have come out with a win,” said forward Joseph-Claude Gyau. “We played well together. From the beginning whistle, we put pressure on them. We could have put away more of our chances in the first half, but I think our overall performance was very, very, very good. We wanted to send the fans off at the end of the season with a win, and it was a bit unfortunate that we came out with a tie.

“I think nobody can hang their heads today. I think we left it all on the field.”

A road match at D.C. United next Sunday is all that remains in FC Cincinnati’s inaugural MLS season. The club has just 23 points and a 6-22-5 record. At Nippert this season, the Orange and Blue lost 11 out of 17.

The result eliminates Orlando (11th place, 37 points, 9-14-10) from playoff contention.

Michel’s goal, a clean-up of a cross from Nani intended for Dom Dwyer, was the 75th conceded by FC Cincinnati. It breaks the MLS single-season record for goals allowed, previously set just last year by, coincidentally enough, Orlando.

FC Cincinnati had one more shot after the equalizer, but Emmanuel Ledesma’s attempt on a cross from Roland Lamah was wide.

It was a promising first half for the home side, with nine shots, including five inside the box and four on target.

“We decided to play both wingers on their weak foot so they can come inside,” FC Cincinnati coach Ron Jans said. “I think maybe Roland had the most chances, but all the balls fell to his right foot to finish off. Maybe he took a little too much time or caught the ball instead of shooting. Maybe that’s a reason. When you look at the whole season, the efficiency of scoring goals, we have to do better. It’s so great, but we have so many bad stats and we can improve on so many things and what we want to do, and finishing is one of them”

Cruz did finish in the 40th minute. From the left wing, Gyau lobbed a through ball to Ledesma. Ledesma crossed to Cruz, who slotted it into the left side for a 1-0 lead.

It was Cruz’s seventh goal of the season and Ledesma’s fifth assist — both team highs. Cruz was just named team MVP last week.

“I’m happy, I’m honored,” said Cruz through an interpreter of his team award. “I think it reflects the hard work that I put in this season and hopefully next season I can show why I was named MVP of the team.”

There was a bit of controversy to close the first half.

Rowe brought down Lamah inside the box, and a possible handball in the same sequence was not called. Then moments later, Cruz received a yellow card for simulation after contact inside the box. Cruz will miss the season finale in Washington next week on yellow card accumulation.

“You have to be used to VAR now,” Jans said. “You never know. I didn’t see it on television and in slow motion. I’m not sure. I have my doubts with the goalkeeper. He was in kind of a sandwich. I’m not sure about that one. The other one I think wasn’t a penalty.”

Each side had their fair share of chances in the second half. Przemyslaw Tyton made one of his two saves from point-blank range on a header from Dom Dwyer in the 50th minute. Derrick Etienne Jr. and Cruz had shots on target for the Orange and Blue, who forced Rowe into six saves.

“I warned them, in the second half they (Orlando) would come out and be more aggressive,” Jans said. “It was about 50-50 maybe in the second half with the chances. You see, it’s so hot, and you get tired, and you have to run and to work both sides. And in extra time you concede a goal. It’s so disappointing, because it was our game.”

FC Cincinnati collected a point in a hard fought scoreless draw at Nippert Stadium. Coach Ron Jans changed his tactics from high press to defend and counter in the past three games and it is paying off. The Orange and Blue have earned two shutouts in their last three games and earned a 1-1-1 record during that period. Chicago is now the second Eastern conference team unable to beat Cincinnati in its inaugural MLS season.

The game itself was tense for Cincinnati fans. The majority of the match was spent in Cincinnati’s half where Chicago strung together 248 accurate passes. FCC’s defense held strong and did a better job of clearing the ball when under pressure as well as providing cover behind the pressuring defender. The back line blocked almost half of Chicago’s shots and limited their opportunities on crosses. Young Super Draft pick, Tommy McCabe stepped into the defensive midfield position and also provided good cover for the defense.

The Orange and Blue did get a few opportunities on the counter especially in the second half when Joseph-Claude Gyau came in the game and was able to take advantage of the space Chicago created as they pressed forward. In the 79th minute, Roland Lamah almost curled a ball perfectly into the far post, but Kronholm, Chicago’s keeper, was able to push it just wide.

One minute later, off the ensuing corner, Emmanuel Ledesma volleyed the ball into the box and Maikel van der Werff looked to head in the match winner only to have the crossbar deny him.

For this tough season, the draw felt like a victory to many. The fans were excited and the team left the pitch for the locker room with smiles on their faces. “It was a hard-fought point, and the game could have gone either way,” commented Joseph-Claude Gyau. “It gives us some good confidence moving forward into the next game.”

By the Numbers:

  • Cincinnati had 46.5% possession. Up slightly from the previous two games of 39.6% and 33.6%.
  • Cincinnati had 78% passing accuracy. Previous two games were 70% and 72%.
  • Chicago made 377 accurate passes. 248 of those passes were in Cincinnati’s half.
  • Chicago took 16 shots. Six shots were blocked. Cincinnati took ten shots. Only one was blocked.
  • Chicago made 32 crosses. Only seven crosses were accurate. Cincinnati made five crosses.
  • Chicago only had one shot on target. Cincinnati had three on target. Same as the last shut versus Montreal.
  • Tytoń was only forced to make one save during the game. Same as the last shut out versus Montreal.

The Orange and Blue matched the single-season record for goals allowed.

FC Cincinnati fans have been lucky to see Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney take the pitch at Nippert Stadium this season. On Wednesday, they were treated to the Josef Martinez show.

The reigning MLS MVP collected two goals just six minutes apart for Atlanta United FC to extend his scoring streak to 15 matches. That was all the defending champions needed to separate themselves from FC Cincinnati in a 2-0 victory at Nippert.

The game was essentially a stalemate until Martinez and Gonzalo Martinez teamed up on a nifty give-and-go counterattack in the 59th minute. Then in the 65th, Josef Martinez shifted past Maikel van der Werff and Nick Hagglund for a first-class finish with his left foot. He’s now tied with Ibrahimovic with 26 goals in the Golden Boot race. Carlos Vela leads with 28.

The second goal was the 74th conceded this year by FC Cincinnati, matching the MLS single-season record set last year by Orlando City SC.

Atlanta United remains in third place with 51 points (16-11-3). FC Cincinnati is stuck on 21 points with a 6-22-3 record.

FC Cincinnati started the match bunkering down on defense. At one point in the first half, Atlanta United had 85% of possession and outpassed FC Cincinnati 336-94 before halftime. The home side totaled 23 clearances.

The Orange and Blue had a spell of attack midway through the half. In the 30th minute, Atlanta United keeper Brad Guzan made a critical save on a van der Werff header.

FC Cincinnati started the second half aggressively. Andrew Gutman slalomed around Atlanta United defender Franco Escobar in the 58th minute, but his shot was blocked out of bounds. The ensuing corner kick led to the Josef Martinez counterattack.

Even trailing 2-0, FC Cincinnati had several opportunities to pull one back but could not cash in. The best second-half chance was when Rashawn Dally receiving a Gutman cross inside the 6-yard box in the 84th minute, but Dally punched it over goal.

The Orange and Blue logged 14 shots but had just two on target. Atlanta United had 15 shots, nine on target, and forced FC Cincinnati goalkeeper Przemyslaw Tyton into four saves.

“This is not for the beauty of the game,” said FC Cincinnati coach Ron Jans after Saturday’s 1-0 victory at the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo. “This is for the result.”

Though the game was ugly and rough for large stretches and extremely physical, especially in the second half, the result was huge for the Orange and Blue. Without a win in nine games, the team snaps that streak before it hits double digits and has some new confidence and energy to play with in its final four games.

Cincinnati struck early with Allan Cruz netting his sixth goal for the club just 25 seconds in for his second goal this season scored in the opening minute. Cruz is now tied with Emmanuel Ledesma for goals scored this season.

With the early goal in hand, FCC had the luxury to sit back and absorb pressure and look for counter-attack opportunities. The game got very physical and referee Ramy Touchan let the game play, for the most part, leading to a lot of frustration from both sides, looking for calls that didn’t come. In the 39th minute, Montreal almost found an equalizer but Przemysław Tytoń came up big for the Orange and Blue and got a palm on the ball keeping Cincinnati in the lead.

The second half picked up immediately where the first half left off, with tempers and frustrations high, and a very physical, chippy game that continued to escalate. In the 48th minute, Montreal’s Orji Okwonkwo was shown yellow for stepping on Greg Garza’s ankle, in what looked like a serious injury for Cincinnati’s recently recovered left back. Fortunately, after evaluation from the trainer, Garza was able to continue. In the 66th minute, Montreal’s Rudy Camacho headed Cruz instead of the ball. Camacho was given a yellow card, and Cruz’s game was over as he was taken directly to the locker room for evaluation. In the 84th minute, Darren Mattocks was knocked down inside the box and had to be carried off the field. In the 87th minute, Kendall Waston was given a second yellow card and sent off leaving FCC to finish the game with only 10 men on the pitch.

All of the chaos and injuries of the second half resulted in 8 minutes of stoppage time that actually ended up being 10 minutes, but when the final whistle blew, the Queen City gave a collective sigh of relief, and  Jans, with a large grin, celebrated his first victory as head coach for Cincinnati. Even knowing Waston is unavailable for the next match and the Cruz and Mattocks may be injured and miss future games didn’t dampen the mood.

“It gives us a lot of confidence and we needed that,” Mathieu Deplagne said. “We’ve conceded a lot in the last games, so a clean sheet and a win on a team that’s trying to make the playoffs, that’s good. Now we have four games to finish the season in a positive way.”

By the Numbers:

  • Montreal took 17 shots. Cincinnati only eight.
  • Montreal made 25 crosses. Cincinnati only made six.
  • Cincinnati had less than 40% possession.
  • Cincinnati had less than 70% passing accuracy.
  • Montreal only had one shot on target. Cincinnati had three on target.
  • Tytoń only made one save during the game, but it was the only one he had to and it earned the team an extra two points for the day.
  • Only one stat matters in the end — goals scored.

FC Cincinnati coach Ron Jans compared the team to the Pirates of the Caribbean last week. Knowing it was out of the playoffs, the team now played to plunder treasure in the form of points from the opposing teams and to be spoilers. There wasn’t any treasure to be had, though, as the Orange and Blue suffered a 5-1 defeat Saturday at Nippert Stadium at the hands of Toronto.

Jans made eight changes to the lineup. Four players, Allan Cruz, Derrick Etienne Jr., Alvas Powell and Kendall Waston were all unavailable having been called up to their respective national teams. Fanendo Adi, Victor Ulloa, Maikel van der Werff and Spencer Richey were unavailable because of injury, and Kekuta Manneh was absent because of a red card suspension. Frankie Amaya and Mathieu Deplagne both returned from injury to help fill up the 18. Tommy McCabe and Joseph-Claude Gyau both got their first MLS starts.

Whatever the lineup, though, one thing is consistent. FC Cincinnati is not doing well on the pitch. In the first 30 minutes of the game, the Orange and Blue struggled to effectively clear the ball at critical moments, and unmarked Toronto players capitalized quickly. By the 28th minute, the score was 3-0 and the game was effectively over. Toronto managed to net two more in the second half, again when FCC struggled to get the ball out of its box. In the final minutes of the game, VAR helped with a call missed by the referee, and FC Cincinnati was awarded a penalty kick that kept it from being shut out at home.

It was an emotional night for Emmanuel Ledesma. After scoring his stoppage-time penalty kick, he displayed his undershirt with “I’m going to miss you dad” written on it.

“To my father that on Thursday passed away,” Ledesma said about the goal and celebration. “He was in Argentina and I’ve lost him. I dedicate it to him, who’s never seen me play soccer, not even when I was a child, due to circumstances in life. That’s what happens when you play with time. I was thinking about bringing him next year so that he could see me. Due to circumstances in life, he had surgery about a month ago and could not travel. I was thinking about bringing him over next year so that he could see me play for the first time, but that happens when you play with time. You don’t play with time. Time has taken him away from me and today I mourn him. I think that somewhere in heaven he is watching me and I want to dedicate this goal to him.”

By the Numbers:

  • In the first half, FCC only had one shot. Toronto had five shots, three on target. All three hit the back of the net.
  • In the second half, FCC tallied seven shots. Toronto took eight.
  • FC Cincinnati goalkeeper Przemyslaw Tytoń made no saves. Toronto counterpart Quentin Westberg made three saves.
  • Cincinnati had less than 40% of the possession.
  • Cincinnati has only been shut out once in the last 12 games.
  • FCC is the first team to start three MLS Super Draft picks this season.

FC Cincinnati took the pitch Saturday against FC Dallas. This was the first meeting between the two clubs. FC Cincinnati was mathematically eliminated from the playoffs in its inaugural MLS season with a 3-1 loss, its 20th of the season

Roland Lamah and Victor Ulloa started the match against their former club. Leonardo Bertone and Kekuta Manneh had their first start since July 21st. Justin Hoyte earned his first start under new coach Ron Jans and his first since Aug. 3. Greg Garza joined the starting line up for his first start since May 19 against Orlando City SC.

Injuries have plagued FCC once again. Goalkeeper Spencer Richey is still out of the running with a back injury. Fanendo Adi and Frankie Amaya are still on the injury list. Mathieu Deplagne joined the injury list as well with a calf injury. This is the first start Deplagne is missing since the beginning of the season.

Jans made it clear before the match that he was going to play guys that fit his system. Jans made five changes to the lineup that fit his vision.

FC Cincinnati came out in front with early chances, courtesy of Ledesma. In the ninth minute, Ledesma had a beautiful shot that hit the post. Barely a minute later, the ball was at Roland Lamah’s foot and he took a shot, but it went just wide.

A few minutes went in FCC’s favor, but it did not last long. In the 13th minute, Ryan Hollingshead put Dallas ahead, his shot soaring past the hands of Przemysław Tytoń.

FCC was back in a position that they have been in most of the season – down by a point early in the match and struggling to find momentum.

In the 18th minute, Ledesma was called for a foul, and Dallas was awarded a free kick about 30 yards out. FCC’s defense cleared the goal. Two corner kicks and two clearances later, Dallas was still giving FCC a run for its money.

Zdenek Ondrasek sneaked through FCC’s defense in the 24th minute, but it fell right into Tytoń’s arms. FCC got the ball at Manneh’s feet, and he was off. Manneh made a strong run down the pitch, getting tangled up in Dallas’ defense, and he was unable to get a shot. Michael Barrios of FC Dallas had a great strike on goal, but Tytoń got his hands on it, keeping the score 1-0 in the 30th minute.

Manneh was taken down in the 37th minute and FCC was awarded a free kick. Matt Hedges received a yellow card for this action. Ulloa stepped up to take the kick, but it was deflected. As soon as it was deflected, Barrios got the ball and was off and running, firing a shot towards the goal, but it was just wide.

In the 40th minute, Lamah headed in the ball after a cross from Ledesma. Jesse Gonzalez blocked it in his first save of the night. The score remained 1-0 when the halftime whistle blew.

Early in the second half, Greg Garza was taken down from behind. Barrios got the ball and sent it flying, making the scoreline 2-0 in the 50th minute. Minutes later, Dallas went back for another shot with an Ondrasek header, but Tytoń blocked it with a big save. Ondrasek got the rebound and tapped it back in, making the score 3-0 within a matter of minutes.

Dallas proved why they were in control of the match. And in the 57th minute, Ulloa fouled, and Dallas was given a free kick, but it did not capitalize.

In the 63rd minute, Reggie Cannon fouled Lamah in the box, resulting in a penalty kick for FC Cincinnati. Ledesma stepped up to take the kick, and he got it past the keeper. Moments later, Dallas had a free kick that fell short, and the score remained 3-1 in the 65th minute.

Brandon Servania’s shot went wide in the 68th minute, but Dallas remained in control of the match with 61% possession. Ledesma was given a yellow card in the 73rd minute for a foul against Paxton Pomykal. The foul was called for review against Manneh.

Referee Guido Gonzalez Jr. reviewed the play and issued a red card against Manneh, FCC’s first red card of the season. FCC finished the match one man down. Manneh will be unavailable to play against Toronto on Saturday.

Fatai Alashe fouled Pomykal, giving Dallas a free kick outside of the box. Andrew Gutman intercepted the ball and was off, but Bryan Acosta took him down. Acosta received a yellow card for the tackle, and FCC was given a free kick. Leonardo Bertone took the free kick, aiming for Kendall Waston, but the ball was short.

Dallas maintained possession and kept FCC on its toes for the remainder of the match. Pomykal sent a shot just wide in stoppage time, and Dallas kept the ball at its feet. Ricardo Pepi entered the match late for Dallas and nearly had his first MLS goal at the age of 16. But Tytoń got his hands on it, giving Dallas a corner that resulted in nothing.

The final whistle blew and Dallas walked away with three points from a 3-1 victory.

The Orange and Blue return to Nippert Stadium to face Toronto FC at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

With a shot at the playoffs in the rearview mirror, FC Cincinnati fans had one date left circled on their calendar as a remaining highlight in the club’s inaugural MLS season — the home leg of the Hell is Real Derby against Columbus Crew SC.

Turns out, it wasn’t much of a highlight.

Two weeks after the sides played to a draw in Columbus, the Crew stole the show Sunday in front of 30,611 at Nippert Stadium. Gyasi Zardes notched a brace in the first 33 minutes en route to a 3-1 Columbus victory, its first derby win in the series.

“In the first half, I didn’t see a team,” FC Cincinnati coach Ron Jans said. “I didn’t see players doing the game plan, and I don’t know why. In the second half, we did much more of the building up, better in possession, creating chances.

“What’s most important — they killed the game. They did a great job, Columbus, in the first half. We had trouble with winning the ball, putting the right pressure and with the speed of the attackers.”

FC Cincinnati remains cemented in 12th place in the East with 18 points (5-19-3). The club is winless in its last seven and last won at home on July 6 against Houston.

Columbus (8-15-6) stays in 11th but creeps a little closer to the playoff line with 30 points, just seven behind seventh-place Toronto FC.

As in Columbus, FC Cincinnati began with a high press with the Crew struggling to advance past midfield.

But then the Crew broke through, consistently running down their right channel and whipping crosses into Zardes. That and sloppy play in the defensive third left the feeling a Crew goal was inevitable.

That goal came in the 22nd minute on a cross from Luis Diaz to Zardes with the FC Cincinnati back line in retreat. Zardes beat Przemyslaw Tyton at the near post for a 1-0 Crew lead. In the 33rd minute, Afful played a ball over the top to Zardes, who slid between Maikel van der Werff and Mathieu Deplagne for a chip-in and a two-goal lead.

Sunday’s performance was a bit of redemption for Zardes, who skied a sitter late in Columbus two weeks ago that would have given the Crew the win.

Zardes scored the (second) goal in the middle, but the cross into the space — we tried to play a little bit higher with (Andrew) Gutman,” Jans said. “But if we don’t press well or we lose the ball, there’s a lot of space behind him. During halftime we made a tactical change to put Victor Ulloa next to Caleb Stanko because he was too alone against two players. The second balls but also with the passing, we were in big trouble, and then they played through the right side.”

The Crew padded the lead in first-half stoppage time. Pedro Santos found Diaz down the right side. Gutman, playing on a yellow card, was in pursuit, but Diaz slotted it past Tyton inside the far post to make it 3-0.

Columbus totalled eight first-half shots, five inside the box. Five of those shots were on target, including the three goals. FC Cincinnati completed 66.5% of its 158 passes in the half.

“They punished us three times,” center back Kendall Waston said. “From there, they can be more relaxed, take care of the ball, have more confidence and we have to chase and chase and chase. We created some chances, but we didn’t score. I think that was the key of the game. In the first half, we weren’t there, we were asleep, and Columbus was ready to go. That’s why they punished us.”

FC Cincinnati had more fight in the second half — with nine shots, five on target — but it was an uphill battle at that point. Kekuta Manneh subbed on for Darren Mattocks, who was limited to just six first-half touches.

Manneh pulled one back in the 89th minute on a through ball from Emmanuel Ledesma, and immediately after, the derby boiled over with a scrum inside the Crew net. Ulloa tried to take the ball from Jonathan Mensah, leading to yellow cards for both after a VAR review.

After three matches, Jans said his approach will remain the same. He acknowledged FC Cincinnati will not make the playoffs, but “the goal is to cultivate a way of playing and to see which players fit in our future plans. I think I was patient in the first three games, but you have to do it, otherwise you are not in the plans of FC Cincinnati and in my plans.

“I like to communicate positively … with my players. I will keep doing that. But sometimes you have a very nice player that you have to tell, maybe in the end, we go on without you. And that’s also my job, part of my job, because I’m not the only one who takes the decisions.”

FC Cincinnati took the pitch on a cloudy night at Nippert Stadium. Saturday night marked head coach Ron Jans’ first home match for the Orange and Blue. Last week in Columbus, Jans got a taste of the Orange and Blue faithful, but last night was the first time Jans experienced the full Nippert effect.

In front of a crowd of over 27,000, Jans led FC Cincinnati to a 4-1 loss against New York City FC. This was not a stark contrast from the last encounter between the two clubs, where FCC fell 5-2 in Yankee Stadium. The Orange and Blue at least scored their own goal this time around.

The starting lineup remained the same from the match in Columbus. Przemysław Tytoń returned to goal in Spencer Richey’s absence.  Tytoń proved his worth against Columbus Crew, where he came up with two huge saves at the end of the match, securing a 2-2 draw. Tytoń, however, struggled to keep that reputation last night, giving up four goals.

New York started the match strong, showcasing why it is in third place in the conference. New York is known for its speed and attacking power, and it gave FCC a run for its money. The two clubs started off chippy and would stay that way for the remainder of the match.

FC Cincinnati struggled, and it seemed that keeping up with NYCFC’s fast pace would be one of the biggest challenges. The Orange and Blue kept up quite well in the first half. After a tough foul in the box, FCC was awarded a penalty kick. Emmanuel Ledesma stepped up, but NYCFC’s keeper, Sean Johnson, saved the shot, keeping the scoreboard blank.

The match remained a battle, with Allan Cruz receiving a yellow card in the 26th minute, but Cruz responded in the best way – burying a shot on goal with an assist from newcomer Andrew Gutman in the 29th minute. As the fans were cheering and before the smoke cleared, NYCFC leveled the playing field. Valentín Castellanos equalized off of an assist from Maximiliano Moralez, and put NYCFC on the scoreboard.

FCC kept its heads in the match and kept on fighting. The momentum didn’t slow down after the opponent scored, which is an improvement from what has happened earlier in the season.

In the 35th minute, NYCFC received a penalty kick after a handball was called on Andrew Gutman. Tytoń was ready for the challenge and blocked the kick just like Johnson had blocked Ledesma’s earlier in the match. The score remained at 1-1, and FCC kept fighting. But in extra time, Héber put NYCFC ahead with a 2-1 lead right before the whistle.

The Orange and Blue would have to work harder in the second half just to equalize and even harder to put themselves ahead. Against an offense like NYCFC, that would prove to be a struggle.

But FCC was not going to give up. Roland Lamah and Ledesma were ready, taking shots whenever they had the ball. They weren’t clean and they were easily blocked, but the drive and motivation was there. The results, however, were not. Runs down the pitch are great and all, but only if there is an available player to finish the run.

In the 65th minute, FCC had another shot to equalize. FCC received a free-kick, and Victor Ulloa stepped up to take it. The ball was aimed for Mathieu Deplagne, but he couldn’t connect, and he went down by the net. Minutes later, NYCFC succeeded where FCC has failed most of the season, scoring off of a corner kick. The score was 3-1 in the 71st minute with another shot by Castellanos.

The Orange and Blue let their frustration show with a flurry of fruitless kicks into the box. The desperate shots did nothing to put FCC ahead. NYCFC rubbed salt in the wound in the 89th minute with another goal, a brace from Héber, ending the match at 4-1.

It’s difficult to look at the end result and not feel apathetic, especially after how this season has gone. Regardless, the club has shown improvement under Jans. While the scoreline doesn’t reflect it, the backline has improved all around.

The club needs to work on maintaining momentum and pushing the front line more. The opportunities are there — chances are being created — but FCC has been falling on finishing these opportunities the entire season.

Finishing these chances will be crucial if it wants to get a win during Rivalry Week. The Orange and Blue are set to face off against northern rivals, Columbus Crew SC again on Aug 25.

COLUMBUS —  Przemyslaw Tyton didn’t know the shot missed until he noticed the MAPFRE Stadium crowd didn’t erupt.

Gyasi Zardes skied his sitter in the 90th minute, but that was just the beginning of Columbus Crew SC’s late onslaught. Another shot hit the bar, and Tyton made two critical saves in the ninth and 10th minute of stoppage time as FC Cincinnati stood tall to earn a 2-2 draw in the first MLS version of the Hell is Real Derby on Saturday. The result snaps a four-match losing streak and christens the Ron Jans era as the club’s head coach.

“Honestly I didn’t watch what happened after my back,” Tyton said. “I just looked at the (Crew) supporters. Are they celebrating or not? They didn’t celebrate, so I was happy. I turn and I see Kendall (Waston, who came sprinting back to defend) in the goal. I am happy that he missed his chance. That was 100% chance.

“The last minute was crazy. So many actions, so many chances for Columbus. We survived — I don’t know how. But we get the point, and we have to be happy.”

The Crew had rallied from an early 2-0 deficit and had all the momentum at the end in an attempt to take all three points in front of their home crowd.

“We got a result,” Jans said. “In the end, I think we were more lucky with the point than Columbus was. The first 35 minutes I think we were the better team, leading 2-0. They got a little bit of an easy penalty I think, but after that we had a lot of problems getting to halftime. In the end, in the last 10 minutes they hit the bar twice. So I don’t think we deserved to win, but I’m really happy with the point.”

It was the first point for FC Cincinnati since winning at Chicago on July 13. The Orange and Blue are now 5-17-3 with 18 points. The Crew move to 7-14-5 with 26 points.

The Hell is Real Derby will shift scenes to Nippert Stadium on Aug. 25. This renewal of the Hell is Real Derby was two years in the making after FC Cincinnati ousted the Crew from the 2017 U.S. Open Cup, and the match didn’t disappoint.

“It was a very nice atmosphere that the fans create,” Tyton said. “There was drama, there were goals, cards, fights, everything.”

Jans had his club step on the gas early, using a high press. New left back Andrew Gutman made his first start and was active on both ends.

FC Cincinnati got on the board in the 16th minute when Darren Mattocks headed home a Victor Ulloa corner kick that left Crew goalkeeper Eloy Room flat-footed.

We practiced that set piece all week, four guys line up in a train and then speed off,” Mattocks said. “I jumped so high that I think I had to duck a little bit to get it there, but thankfully it went in.”

Then in the 23rd minute, a Roland Lamah cross filtered through to Emmanuel Ledesma at the top of the 6-yard box. Ledesma slotted it inside the far post to give FC Cincinnati a 2-0 lead. It’s just the seventh time this season the club has scored multiple goals.

The Crew pulled one back right before halftime. Maikel van der Werff was called for a soft foul on Zardes inside the penalty box. Zardes converted the penalty kick with Tyton diving to his left and Zardes shooting the other way.

“It was a little push from van der Werff,” Jans said. “OK, you can give a penalty, but I think most referees will not give it. That was very important. It gave them a boost, and we were all over the place the last few minutes before halftime”

FC Cincinnati’s intensity dropped off a touch in the second half, and the Crew leveled the match at 2-2 on a 30-yard screamer from Pedro Santos.

Jans introduced the club’s two newest additions, Joseph-Claude Gyau and Derrick Etienne Jr., together in the 63rd and 64th minutes to add a burst of speed.

“I think it was fatigue maybe,” Jans said of the difference in the halves. “We were pressing so much. We were getting the ball so many times, it cost a lot of energy. In this weather, it’s sometimes difficult.”

Then the cards came out.

Santos earned a yellow after pulling down Mathieu Deplagne in the 68th minute. And in second-half stoppage time, Ulloa and Allan Cruz were carded for trying to bring down David Accam. Ulloa received five stitches near his left eye from a knock in the incident.

That allowed for additional stoppage time, setting up Tyton’s massive saves. He had four on the night, and the Crew totalled 19 shots to FC Cincinnati’s seven.

“I really liked the atmosphere, the intensity,” Jans said. “I’d like to have some more derbies. In two weeks, we’ll have one more against the same opponent. I liked it. I liked it a lot.”
